Should You Really Rinse Rice Before You Cook It?

Below are the things that will happen if you do not wash the rice:

  • As opposed to being washed, unwashed rice is gluey in texture, as opposed to being firm
  • The rice grains are big and sticky

As you would expect, washed rice is a lot better than unwashed rice. Other than being inconvenient and dirty, unwashed rice gives more bubbles while it boils. Also, unwashed rice contains more starch than unwashed rice. While cooking the rice, the starch should mix with the grains and turn into a few lumps.

When Rinsing in Really Necessary

Long ago, when white rice was manufactured, it was processed with talc, which is a mineral. Hence, the talc gave the rice a white, cleaner look. Therefore, rinsing it was a must. Nowadays, there is a new way of processing it. Note that imported rice grains still contain talc and other things, like a rice powder and glucose, which is also powered. Although these are safe for consumption, getting rid of them is recommended by washing. If the recipe you are working with aims for a sticky texture, then you may leave it unwashed. Otherwise, it is highly recommended.
