We’re all familiar with the saying, “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away.”
Numerous research studies are providing strong scientific evidence that apples do indeed promote good health throughout our lifetime. Research has also shown that the nutrients in whole apples that provide many important health benefits are “passed along” when the fruit is processed into apple juice.*
The Good News Keeps Getting Even Better
Recent studies suggest that apple juice may provide health benefits that go well beyond the long-established vitamin- and mineral-associated benefits of natural fruits. Apple juice is also rich in “phytonutrients,” which are believed to have powerful antioxidant effects and which have been linked to lowered risk for many chronic and age-related ailments. These studies offer evidence that phytonutrients support and promote good health by:
- Reducing the risk of certain cancers
- Protecting against brain cell damage
- Reducing the risk of heart disease
- Reducing the risk of asthma

Nutrition Research – Year in Review
Dr. Rui Hai Liu of Cornell University published breakthrough breast cancer research in the January 2009 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. His research found that apples – and specifically apple peel – contain powerful substances that can help inhibit the deadliest and highly malignant type of cancer from forming in the breast. The researchers at Cornell believe special phytochemicals in the apples interrupted and turned off the chemical pathway of human breast cancer cells.

Apple juice may delay Alzheimer’s disease
The research team of Thomas B. Shea of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, carried out a number of laboratory studies demonstrating that drinking apple juice helped mice perform better than normal in maze trials and prevented the decline in performance that was otherwise observed as the mice aged.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, demonstrated that mice receiving the human equivalent of two glasses of apple juice per day for one month produced less of a small protein fragment called beta-amyloid that is responsible for forming the “senile plaques” commonly found in brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
Apple juice ‘protects the heart’
Compounds in apples and apple juice called phytonutrients act in much the same way that red wine and tea do to delay the break down of LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
When LDL oxidises, or deteriorates in the blood, plaque accumulates along the walls of the coronary artery and causes atherosclerosis (a dangerous thickening of the artery).
Lead researcher Dianne Hyson, a dietician, said: “Previous studies have shown that eating fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of coronary artery disease”.”But this is the first clinical study to show the potential benefits of active compounds in apple juice and apples.”
Apple juice ‘may prevent asthma’
The National Heart and Lung Institute research, published in the European Respiratory Journal, is the latest study to link apples and lung health.
The study looked at five to 10-year-old schoolchildren in the Greenwich area of London, asking their parents about their child’s fruit intake, and about any symptoms they had suffered.
Children who drink plenty of apple juice may be less likely to develop asthma symptoms, say scientists.
